recently, i did away with my wireless router. settled for a direct connection. i have an extra puter i am trying to connect via a cable modem. my provider is comcast. i plugged the cable to the port. when i attempted access to the net. it gave me an error message. it tells me my lan/local connection has no conativity. so, i researched it. found the main reason, so i think. i need to assign an ip address. however, i have tried windows's automaticly performing it but it still tells me there is no ip address assigned. i even tried doing a config/release then config/renew but nothing. tried repairing the connection. nothing. used the wizard to establish a new connection. still nothing. any ideas?thanks gizzy

Assuming the following:
- you are directly connected between your cable modem and your computer:
Basically it sounds like your cable modem has not itself gotten the assigned IP Address.
Shut down your computer, then unplug the power to your cable modem. If your modem has a battery, you will need to find it's pinhole reset button and use a straightened paper clip or a stylus to reset it.
After thirty seconds or so, replug it back in. Wait another 30 then switch on your PC.
You would only be entering an IP address if you had a static one. If you don't know, that means you don't: people pay good money for static IP, so their wallet tells them they have one.
That is at least your beginning steps.
If that doesn't work write back and explain what happened, / errors you got, and what OS you are running.

To add to this, make sure the modem is off for at lesat 30 seconds, I have had same issues with a wireless router and tried to impatient resets of 15 seconds that did not work, a last try of 40 seconds did the trick.
It is called power cycling the modem I think.

You're right thanks for the clarification.
FWIW I don't recommend users plug straight into the modem, even if they do have a software firewall. Just a straight 4-port router is fine if you don't want one with wireless, though the wireless routers have really come down in price.

I finally gave up on my pc, put my modem and router in the living room and connected them there, put my laptop on my braille display on my desk and magically got rid of tons and tons of cables, it is truly so much more convenient.
If you are one of the few to have money you can even get one of the wireless tb or 2tb drive stations and then you can store all your files and access them wirelessly from anywhere in the house, these start at around $200 though, but you can connect printers and such to them as well as do torrent download and tv streaming.
